Editorial design

I lay out books, magazines and catalogues, from the raw content right through to the print-ready file.

If you need it, I’ll also design the whole system from scratch: the grid, the typefaces, the rhythm of the pages. And I see the job through to the printer. I work from Cecina, in Tuscany, and I can run projects remotely as well.

A coffee table book, a seasonal tabloid, a furniture company’s magazine and a collection catalogue: each with its own grid.

Questions about editorial design

  • How much does it cost to lay out a catalogue or a book?

I don’t have a price list: every project gets its own quote. Once we’ve talked it through, I’ll send you the stages, timings and costs, with what’s included and what isn’t.

  • Do you deliver print-ready files?

Yes, I take it all the way to the print-ready file. I also prepare the artwork for special finishes: for Crafting Excellence, the midnight-blue cover with the gold lily and the embossed title.

  • Do you work with my own text and photos?

Yes, that’s usually exactly where we start. In Crafting Excellence the photos were by Ludovica Barone and Niccolò Leone, and the layout had to do them justice without stealing the show. On T Magazine I worked alongside the editorial team, from planning the content to the final artwork.

  • Do you design the grid from scratch too?

Yes, if needed. For F.U.C.K. Magazine, a 28×42 cm tabloid, I worked on grids designed for wide pages: they keep every issue consistent, and within them each article moves in its own way.

  • Do you oversee the printing?

Yes. For F.U.C.K. Magazine I see production right through to the press check, issue after issue.

(Got a book or magazine to lay out?)

I’ll lay it out page by page and see it all the way to the printer.
